York is a much loved city, visited by thousands of tourists every year due to its wealth of heritage and tourist attractions. The walled city has been an important trading city since Roman times and celebrates a diverse range of cultural and commercial activities.

The first stop for visitors to York is York cathedral, the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe, described as one of the best in the world and definitely worth the 250 wait for it to be built. The stained glass windows are mesmerising and the grand orb provides great photo opportunities. Not far from the cathedral, you will find York Art Gallery, a place where history meets modern art and where you can enjoy a great view over the city walls.

Clifford’s Tower also offers great views over the heart of old York. The tower is found at the original site of York Castle. You can take a guided tour of the tower, where you can stop to enjoy the stunning views and soak up the atmosphere. There are also tours for children, including workshops and craft sessions to keep your little ones entertained.

Enjoy over 100 high street shops an independent boutiques in the Gillygate Shopping Centre, where you can also rest your legs and grab a bite to eat. Gillygate is home to dozens of restaurants and bars, to suit all tastes, whether that be a popular chain or yummy independent. Newgate Market is a must visit venue for food lovers, with over 120 stalls selling local treats and delicacies, to eat in or take away. The Shambles is, perhaps, the most famous street in York, though, where tourists can shop until they drop along the quirky medieval street. The cobbled street is lined with gift shops, sweet shops, favourite big name brands and local independents and is a great place to sit and people watch.

York is home to The National Railway Museum, home to the largest collection of railway memorabilia in the world. Train fans can enjoy exploring over 280 locomotives and learn all about the history of steam trains and the influences railways had on the people of York. You can also celebrate modern trains too, including a chance to experience a ride on a Mallard, via a simulator. Transport fans can also enjoy a cruise down the River Ouse and enjoy wonderful views of this beautiful city.
