Norfolk has an amazingly diverse landscape, that allows for a variety of regional food that is difficult to beat. With miles of coastline providing fresh fish and seafood, hedgerows upon hedgerows of wild berries plus the highest standards of meat welfare, Norfolk is a foodies idea of heaven.
Keeping it Local
With fresh fish from North Sea, each variety is eaten when it is in season and anything shipped in is generally frowned upon. Once you have tasted in season Lobster and Samphire there is no going back. Hoteliers and restaurant managers pride themselves in supporting local producers, that merit quality over profit. Pig farms are ethical and free range and fruit and vegetable suppliers do not have the burden of air miles on their conscience.
Residents will support local and independent shops as much as possible, when they cannot grow or produce food for themselves that is. A visit to Norfolk will not be complete without a visit one of its many farmers markets, that are full to the brim with local fare. The bigger markets at Creake Abbey, Fakenham, Wymondham and Swaffham, all offering the chance to taste something different and to be educated on animal welfare. Expect to see locals and visitors foraging for mushrooms, berries and herbs as they walk along the vast Norfolk plains.
Festivals
As you would expect from a City entrenched in positive food ethics, there are festivals aplenty, to celebrate the pleasures that food brings. The Norfolk Food & Drink Festival is now the largest county-wide event of its kind in the country and is packed full of fun, frolics and falafel! Independent producers, makers, restaurants and food stores come together to put on a show and fill the stomachs of food fanatics each year. As well as the big yearly shindig there are smaller events such as The Moveable Feast and Battle of the Bangers in beautiful Norwich.
Fancy a Brew?
As well as great food, Norfolk also prides itself on being an innovator of brewing, with a growing craft beer and cider scene. With over 25 micro-breweries in Norfolk, there are plenty of fun and tasty beers to be consumed and plenty of fun night to be had. Brewers will not settle for second best and are very experimental with flavours. Golden Promise and Maris Otter are particular highlights.
Whether you are visiting Norfolk for a weekend break or are on business for the week, you are sure to go home with your eyes opened, your belly full and your mind at ease, due to the wonderfully tasty and ethical food the region has on offer.
