With the growing popularity of stay-cations, more and more people are looking to holiday in Britain. There is so much on offer here at home, but where can you go when you, a family member or friend are disabled and need to be sure your destination is accessible? Journalist, broadcaster and wheelchair user Mik Scarlet went to the Norfolk Broads National Park to discover how this beautiful region has set it’s sights on being a dream location for a get away for disabled people.

Before I arrived to start filming, I was blown away by Norfolk’s stunning scenery. Breath taking would be an understatement, and I felt a growing excitement as I pulled into my hotel’s car park. After a wonderful night’s sleep, in a superbly appointed wheelchair accessible room, I set off for our first trip to the Norfolk Broads. I am very lucky as my job means I get to travel all over the UK and try out many dream experiences, but nothing prepared me for what was on offer in this national park.
As I travelled from one filming location to the next I was amazed at the commitment and dedication to creating full access for disabled visitors. Everywhere I went was not only accessible but inclusively so, meaning disabled visitors have the same experience of the attractions as any other holiday maker. The service was second to none too. It was so wonderful to witness a real desire to ensure disabled people were catered for at every turn, and I soon found myself falling in love with Norfolk. If you’ve never been and want a holiday that allows you to forget worries about access, then the Norfolk Broads National Park is a must. I might see you there as we want to go back very soon.
