With a wealth of cultural attractions, world class architecture, fantastic shopping and a year round programme of exciting events it is easy to understand why millions of visitors flock to Glasgow each year. The city is rich in yearly festivals which span the worlds of music, film, theatre, art and sport, so there is something for everyone in this bonny city.
Start your day by exploring a few of Glasgow’s many cultural attractions. First stop for art enthusiasts is The Glasgow School of Art, designed by its beloved Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who is the talent behind many of the art nouveau building in the city. Other highlights include the magnificent Riverside Museum, Kelvingrove Gallery and Visual Arts Glasgow. The Hunterian Museum is the oldest public museum in the UK and is a must see, due to its impressive collection of Roman artefacts and ethnographic objects from Captain Cook’s Pacific voyages. Opera and Ballet fans can enjoy a trip the Theatre Royal, home to some of the most prestigious companies in Scotland. Glasgow Cathedral is one of the most beautiful in the UK and is said to be built on the site of St Kentigern’s tomb, making it the birthplace of the city. The highlight of the cathedral is the impressive collection of post war stained glass and the carved stone bosses on its ceiling.
Glasgow has been voted the second best shopping destination in the UK, behind London’s West End. With flagship department stores such as taking up the high street alongside designer brands and high street favourites, you can certainly see why people head to the city for a pot of retail therapy. As well as big name, Glasgow proudly supports independent shops and producers, with a strong presence of small art and craft shops that show off the city’s creative streak. There are many bars and restaurants to head to when you want to take a break for shopping but if you are a fan of afternoon tea you cannot miss out on a trip to The Willow Tearooms. The tearoom is housed in one of Mackintosh’s most quaint buildings and the food will delight just as much as the decor. If you are wanting to stay in the city for a spot of entertainment, there are theatres and concert venues across the city, with everyone from big name stars to grassroots musicians ready to keep you dancing into the night.
A day in Glasgow will not disappoint, whatever you decide to do and you are sure to return year upon year for a dose of culture, shopping and a hearty dose of Scottish spirit.
